Central America 2003

Central America 2003

In late April and early May 2003, John Fulton, Margaret Dahlen and Doug Cayne flew Doug's King Air E90 from northern California to Mexico and Belize. This web site is a snapshot album from that trip.

The main part of the bathroom has double sinks and a deep bath/shower finished in tile. The rear of the bathroom is all screens, opening into an outdoor stone courtyard with another shower outside.

Plenty of room in this bathroom.

The entire front of the villa is screens and thatched roof, looking out on the beach and the ocean. Not a bad place to spend some time!

On the way out to the reef, we spotted several fins in the water, belonging to this school of dolphins.
IMG_0127
The dolphins swam with the boat a little ways, before breaking off and heading away.
IMG_0128
Lots of fun seeing the dolphins.

Nearing the reef, we stopped at this small atoll for a snorkel and lunch. When we arrived, we were the only ones there. But by the time we finished snorkeling, two other boats had arrived with a crowd, everyone wanting to use the fire pit for cooking lunch.

We had Blancaneaux send its Brittan-Norman Islander, &quotSofia", to fly us from Placencia to Blancaneaux Lodge. Raphael Perez was our pilot.

The view from &quotSofia" after take-off from Plancencia, looking back on the runway and Turtle Inn. The runway is the long horizontal line in the picture, extending out on the narrow bridge across the lagoon. The thatched roofs of Turtle Inn can just be seen in the extreme lower left-hand corner of the photo.
We overflew Blancaneaux Lodge prior to landing. In this photo, the runway is the horizontal line across the top of the picture. The river runs horizontally across the middle of the picture, with the lodge's villas alongside it.

The arrow shows Francis Ford Coppola's villa (he designed and owns the lodge), where we stay while there.

One of the many Mayan pyramids at Tikal in Guatemala. This one is excavated in front only. To the rear, you see what's left of the dirt mound that was covering it when it was discovered in the jungle a hundred years ago.

The front side of the same pyramid. The stone stella and alters in front of the pyramid are said to mark where human sacrifices were performed.
